With a name like Painterly Resource Pack, it would only make sense to assume the textures in this pack look like painted pastels. This is actually fairly accurate, especially when you consider the low 16x resolution of Painterly. Without a high enough resolution to include detailed textures, many of the blocks, bricks, items and other imagery in Minecraft ends up looking flat, bright and bold with Painterly installed. If you like those sorts of effects, then you’re probably going to like Painterly.

If you don’t, then you’ll want to keep moving – this is not the resource pack for you. Painterly could be the single most customizable resource pack available for Minecraft today. So many aspects of Painterly can be tweaked, adjusted and changed, that two different players using Painterly could have completely different experiences based on their preferences. You can get pretty much whatever you want out of Painterly, and that’s saying quite a lot. You don’t have to have any knowledge of Java or modding either – when downloading Painterly from the resource pack’s website, you will tell the site how you want to customize the pack, then get to download exactly what you want. If that doesn’t appeal to you, there’s not much else to say about Painterly resource pack, so you should probably get going to some other resource pack.

But if you do like packs that give you a great deal of control over the content they provide, as well as a simplistic look and low resolution textures that allow for almost anyone playing Minecraft to use the resource pack, you will definitely want to take a look at Painterly. It’s not perfect, but it’s about as close as you can get to perfect. I confess that when I found a texture pack I loved I've never gone back to the original look: I'm going to start off with that one and then explore the the rather vibrant world of Minecraft Texture packs. There's nothing too crazy in here: those packs tend to be part of larger mods that fundamentally change the game, and that's another article entirely. But what we do have here is a fantastic selection of textures that bring all sorts of style to the game, from the ultra-realistic to the cartoonish to far out sci fi. Compared to Jollicraft, it’s a much more sombre pack, but a Minecraft world looks surprisingly good with muted colours.

And if sombre is your sort of thing, then I thoroughly recommend you give this pack a try. As well as its slightly faded walls, its glimmering starfield and its gorgeous moon, this steampunk pack also features some fantastic tools and skins. Just check out the how golem looks now: Another pack with a buildable core: Dokucraft is one of the most famous texture packs for Minecraft: a cute, generic fantasy riff on the world. If it wasn't overtly fantastical now, it will be after this pack.
